Early Half Eagles
1807 $5 Bust Left, BD-8, R.2, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b. The usual die state with a bold clash mark on Liberty's neck. The year 1807 saw a changeover in the design of the half eagle, with John Reich's Capped Bust Left portrait and new eagle motif replacing the previous Robert Scott design. Two die pairs were employed to strike 51,605 of the new five dollar gold coins, BD-8 being by far the more available than BD-7. The primary attribution point for the variety is the tip of the 5 in the denomination pointing to the tip of the fletching. All 1807 Capped Bust Left half eagles are scarce in Mint State, and those that do survive in Uncirculated condition are apt to be found in MS62 to MS63.
The design elements on each side of this marvelous first-year representative are characteristically sharp, most notably at the extreme centers. Light honey-gold surfaces glitter with frosty luster, contributing further to the appeal. This MS62 five dollar gold piece is undeniably high-end for the grade with only a handful of inconsequential marks scattered in the fields. Very seldom seen finer. CAC: 9 in 62, 13 finer (10/16).
From The Hutchinson Collection.
