Early Half Eagles
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-4, High R.4, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e. The BD-4 variety is scarce in all grades with fewer than 100 pieces believed known. This terminal die state marks the end of this obverse's second use and the reverse's only use. Two prominent rim cuds appear near ES OF on the reverse, and heavy cracking is seen above STATES. The obverse is cracked along the entire right-hand periphery. This Choice AU Heraldic Eagle 1798 five is bright and partially lustrous with yellow-gold surfaces. The very central high points of each side exhibit strike softness, but the borders are sharp and evenly struck. A few light, scattered abrasions are consistent with the grade.
