Early Half Eagles
1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-6, R.5, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b with two lengthy vertical die cracks on the reverse. This peach-red and green-gold representative is sharply struck and displays surprisingly few marks. The portrait displays a few vertical and parallel adjustment marks, as coined. The Dannreuther reference refers to the variety as the "Normal Over Large 8." The 1 is repunched south, the 0 is repunched both north and south. The 4 is not repunched. The obverse die was paired with three reverses; BD-6 is readily attributed by two long, straight die lines from leaftips to the eagle's wing and the R in AMERICA.
