Early Half Eagles
1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5, BD-4, R.2, MS64 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, a perfect dies example with no evidence of die cracks, clash marks, or lapping on either side. Nearly all known examples are from the early die states as illustrated here, and that is quite remarkable given the extremely high mintage that John Dannreuther estimates between 75,000 and 90,000 coins. This impressive Choice Mint State piece exhibits frosty luster with brilliant light yellow surfaces and hints of peripheral rose toning on the reverse. Population: 35 in 64 (1 in 64+), 4 finer (11/16).
