Liberty Half Eagles
1851-C $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 1, as usual. The 1851-C half eagle is scarcer than its mintage of nearly 50,000 pieces would suggest, with a survival estimated at 175 to 225 pieces in all grades (Winter 2008). The date becomes extremely rare in Uncirculated condition, where NGC lists 15 submissions, including possible resubmissions. Of these, coins grading finer than MS62 are prohibitively rare. The present MS62 coin displays above-average eye appeal for the grade, showing only light field chatter that prevents an even finer numeric designation. The strike is bold, and each side offers pleasing yellow-gold color. Some reflectivity is seen in the fields. Census: 5 in 62 (2 in 62+), 3 finer (10/16).
