Liberty Half Eagles
1858-C $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. In the context of Charlotte half eagles, the 1858-C is among the most plentiful, boasting a survival estimated at as many as 375 pieces. Yet, as with most Southern gold issues, the '58-C becomes a genuine rarity in Mint State, and coins grading finer than the present MS62 example are prohibitively rare and unknown at PCGS. Sharp detail characterizes the stars, hair curls, and central eagle plumage, contrasting with typically subpar strike quality of most other issues in the Charlotte series. Satiny luster illuminates the fields, and grade-limiting surface chatter is hardly distracting to the unaided eye. The fields exhibit areas of subtle reflectivity. Population: 6 in 62 (1 in 62+), 0 finer (10/16).
