Liberty Half Eagles
1861-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. The Confederacy seized the Charlotte, North Carolina Mint in late April, 1861, although coinage operations were allowed to continue under Confederate authority through May, using gold bullion that remained in the facility. The entire mintage for the 1861-C half eagle was 6,879 pieces, of which 887 have been attributed to the Confederacy (Winter 2008). As only a single die pair was employed for the issue, it is impossible to certainly identify the number of pieces struck under each government. Later, the Charlotte Mint was used in part as a hospital during the war.
The 1861-C half eagle as a date is scarce in all grades with only 150 to 175 pieces believed extant. Mint State examples are prohibitively rare. This Choice AU coin displays an excellent strike and satiny straw-gold coloration. Scattered marks on each side are typical of the grade. Census: 18 in 55, 22 finer (10/16).
