Liberty Half Eagles
1899-S $5 MS66 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint coined 1.5 million half eagles in 1899, and one of those was purchased directly from the Mint by John H. Clapp. That coin is graded MS69 NGC and is the finest known, while the present piece is tied with one other for the second best submitted to PCGS. This sharply defined Premium Gem is a captivating example that exhibits brilliant and satiny yellow-gold luster with a splash of orange toning at the lower left reverse and a dark toning line near the mintmark. An exquisite representative for the connoisseur. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (11/16).
