Liberty Eagles
1865-S $10 AU55 NGC. The Smithsonian lacks a Normal Date 1865-S eagle, and there are only 25 to 35 pieces known in private hands, almost all in circulated condition. The 1865-S ten had a mintage of 16,700 pieces, including a number of coins struck with a die that showed an inverted date beneath the primary date. Both varieties are rare in all grades, but the Normal Date coins are in the minority.
The present Choice AU representative displays bold detail and substantial original luster, glowing in fiery orange-gold hues in the protected regions of the fields. Scattered abrasions in the open areas are consistent with the grade. Eye appeal exceeds expectations. This piece grades finer than any coin reported by PCGS. Census: 6 in 55, 5 finer (10/16).
