Liberty Eagles
1869-S $10 AU58 NGC. "The 1869-S eagle is an underrated date that is every bit as rare as the much lower mintage 1869 eagle": Thus begins the narrative on this issue in Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins. The PCGS population estimates for the two dates are identical: 60 to 75 pieces known in all grades. The 1869-S eagle boasts a small mintage of 6,430 pieces, which circulated extensively in Western regions. Mint State examples of the date are prohibitively rare, and AU coins are hardly any more plentiful. This near-Mint representative offers substantial yellow-gold luster in the fields and sharp internal devices. The peripheral stars exhibit trivial softness. Light chatter on each side is typical of the grade. Census: 4 in 58, 1 finer (10/16).
