Liberty Eagles
1873 $10 Closed 3 AU58 NGC. The 1873 eagle (all struck with Closed 3 in the date) is one in a series of sought-after low-mintage rarities. Ten dollar gold production decreased by more than half from 1872 to 1873, when only 800 pieces were struck. David Akers once wrote: "The 1873 is one of the five or six rarest dates in the U.S. $10 gold series. Among Philadelphia Mint Liberty Head issues, only the 1875 is rarer. There are relatively few known specimens in any condition, perhaps 12-15 business strikes and only 7-8 proofs." Years later, the population is estimated to be around 25 to 35 coins. Few are as nice as this near-Mint representative. NGC lists four submissions in this grade with none finer. There are three AU58 examples at PCGS with a single MS60 graded higher (10/16).
Partly reflective fields surround well-struck motifs on each side. Scattered abrasions limit the contrast to a degree, but the eye appeal is nonetheless impressive. A hint of softness over Liberty's ear is the only area of noticeable friction. This is an extremely rare opportunity to procure one of the finest examples of this Philadelphia key date. Expect fierce competition when the lot crosses the block.
