Liberty Eagles
1873-CC $10 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2-B. Closed 3, as always. The base of the 1 shows doubling, and the point of the tailfeather is positioned over the left edge of the second C in the mintmark. With a mintage of 4,543 coins and a survival rate of perhaps 75 to 85 pieces, it is no wonder Doug Winter ranked the 1873-CC ten dollar the third-rarest Carson City eagle overall and the rarest in high grades. Rusty Goe explained in The Mint on Carson Street: "Evidence of heavy local circulation around the Comstock region is the inferior quality seen on practically all examples extant." This Choice XF coin is a pleasing exception.
Rich orange-gold color paints each side with complementary pale lavender shadings. Smooth surfaces display few abrasions worthy of individual attention. The curls around Liberty's face are moderately soft, as always, but the overall impression is surprisingly bold. Certified in a green label holder. Population: 13 in 45, 15 finer (10/16).
From The Soluna Collection.
