Liberty Eagles
1876 $10 AU50 PCGS. The 1876 eagle famously boasts the second-lowest mintage of the series at a paltry 687 coins. Only the 1875, with a mintage of 100 pieces, has a smaller production total. Foreign trade was supplied by double eagles in 1876, and domestic commercial need for large denomination gold was virtually nonexistent. Having been in suspension since the beginning of the Civil War, specie payments were not resumed until January 1879, a year in which eagle coinage spiked to more than 384,000 pieces in response.
The rare 1876 eagle has a meager surviving population of only 40 or 50 pieces, almost all of which are in circulated condition. Here offered is a sharply detailed AU example with rich orange-gold color and remnants of prooflike mirroring. Scattered abrasions appear on each side, as expected for the issue. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 12 in 50, 15 finer (10/16).
From The Soluna Collection.
