Indian Eagles
1907 $10 No Motto MS67 NGC. At President Theodore Roosevelt's insistence, Augustus Saint-Gaudens adorned the visage of Liberty with the headdress of a native American to create an iconic design that replaced the long-running Liberty Head obverse of the ten dollar gold piece. Saint-Gaudens' original design was modified by the combined efforts of Mint Engraver Charles Barber and Saint-Gaudens' associate Henry Hering to make the motif viable for mass production, including lowering the relief and removing the triangular stops (periods) from E PLURIBUS UNUM.
This example of the No Motto Indian eagle is highly lustrous and frosty, with variegated rose and lime-green highlights enhancing the vibrant yellow-gold coloration. The strike is extremely sharp on this well-produced coin, while the surfaces show only two or three tiny marks on the reverse and a small luster graze beneath the chin on the obverse. Despite many coins being saved as the first year of a dramatic new design, the issue is rare in Superb Gem condition or finer. Census: 30 in 67 (2 in 67+), 3 finer (10/16).
