Liberty Double Eagles
1850 $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Always in demand as the first year of regular production for the Liberty Head double eagle series, the 1850 Philadelphia issue is an ideal selection for the Type One design as well as for its inaugural issue status. More than 1.1 million pieces were struck. Few were saved in high grades, and only 26 pieces were recovered from the S.S. Central America at last count.
This near-Mint example is but a hint of rub away from a much finer Mint State designation. The satiny and still-lustrous surfaces show a few tiny marks, but no distracting abrasions. The strike is particularly bold on Liberty's portrait. The yellow-gold color of California gold shines brightly from both sides. A minor rim ding above F in OF is little more than a shiny spot on the dentils. CAC-endorsement confirms the quality. Population: 50 in 58, 89 finer. CAC: 20 in 58, 13 finer (11/16).
