Liberty Double Eagles
1850 $20 MS62 NGC. Although more than 1.1 million pieces were struck of the 1850 double eagle, few Mint State examples survive. The shipwreck finds yielded no substantial number of Uncirculated coins, nor have any significant hoards added to the availability. Moreover, demand is strong for the first-year issue as the debut of the denomination despite the fact that privately minted pieces by the Mormons in 1849 lay claim to being the first such American twenty dollar gold pieces.
This is an exceptionally nice example of the Liberty Head Type One design, with glittering greenish-gold patina and smooth, minimally abraded fields. Liberty's cheek and neck show only shallow signs of contact. Frosty cartwheel luster radiates from both sides, with some prooflike surface surrounding the reverse motifs. The strike is sharply brought up on all of the raised elements and the eye appeal is terrific. Census: 25 in 62 (1 in 62+), 13 finer (10/16).
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
