Liberty Double Eagles
1854-S $20 MS63 NGC. CAC. The San Francisco Mint became operational in 1854, but a shortage of parting acids necessary for refining ore stunted double eagle coinage to little more than 141,000 pieces. The coins that were struck experienced active circulation in Gold Rush-period California. Uncirculated survivors are scarce in any grade, and Select coins are rare. This piece is the second finest of only four 1854-S twenties stickered by CAC (10/16). The strike is sharp throughout, and the fields offer softly frosted yellow-gold luster with a few light marks. Liberty's cheek is pleasantly devoid of heavy abrasions. The quality of this coin greatly surpasses that of most Mint State 1854-S double eagles offered. Finer coins are exceedingly rare. Census: 23 in 63 (2 in 63+), 10 finer (10/16).
