Liberty Double Eagles
1855-O $20 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1. New Orleans double eagles from the mid 1850s are all rare, low-mintage issues. Both the 1854-O and 1856-O twenties are legendary rarities, yet the 1855-O cannot be overlooked because it is clearly challenging as well in grades exceeding XF45. This About Uncirculated example is attractive for the grade and exceptionally original among the few similarly graded examples that exist.
Like most of the '55-Os, the hair on top of Liberty's head and below her ear shows high-point blending in addition to light wear. Natural orange-gold toning reveals plentiful mint luster for the grade. Abrasions are simply not a problem. Liberty's cheek and the surrounding fields display a serene smoothness as if the coin was long-held as part of a fine, old collection, perhaps in a kraft envelope. A truly impressive example, seldom seen any finer. Population: 9 in 53, 6 finer (10/16).
