Liberty Double Eagles
1855-S $20 MS63 PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 6261. Variety 14A. Broken A, Full E. The S.S. Central America yielded more than 300 1855-S double eagles during salvage, producing a collectible population of Mint State coins. Nonetheless, examples grading as fine as the present MS63 representative are rare, and higher-grade pieces are exceedingly so. Housed in a gold-label PCGS holder, this CAC-endorsed coin showcases luminous orange-gold surfaces with sharp devices and light, scattered grazes that determine the grade. A loupe reveals some faint etching in the luster from spending more than a century in the Atlantic Ocean. Eye appeal is excellent for the grade. Population: 14 in 63, 9 finer. CAC: 3 in 63, 2 finer (10/16).
