Liberty Double Eagles
1856 $20 MS61 NGC. The 1856 Liberty double eagle claims an adequate mintage of 329,878 pieces, but the issue is surprisingly difficult to locate in today's market, especially in high-grade. The coins were released into circulation and circulated heavily, suffering much loss and attrition over the years. Unlike some other Type One double eagles, relatively few examples have surfaced in recent shipwreck recoveries. The 1856 is rare in all Mint State grades, and very rare above the MS61 level.
The present coin exhibits sharply detailed central design elements, but a touch of the usual softness shows on some stars. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show the minimum number of contact marks for the grade and vibrant satiny mint luster adds to the outstanding visual appeal. Census: 11 in 61, 4 finer (10/16).
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
