Liberty Double Eagles
1857-O $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. Overshadowed by several other O-Mint dates in the 1850s as well as the 1860-O, the 1857-O is somewhat more obtainable in Choice About Uncirculated than other New Orleans dates. In the context of the Liberty Head twenty series, it is still a rare, low-mintage issue. Just 30,000 pieces were struck and most pieces circulated. Perhaps as few as 150 to 300 pieces survive for collectors in all grades, depending on which reference is preferred.
This example displays fleeting glimpses of reddish-gold toning over bright, yellow-gold patina. The formerly prooflike surfaces are now occupied by small abrasions and field chatter, but a strong strike remains as does considerable mint luster. Original mirroring surrounds the raised elements along the margins. Only minor rub is seen on the high points. Census: 37 in 55, 30 finer (10/16).
