Liberty Double Eagles
1857-S $20 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 1610. Variety 20A. Spiked Shield. Two die scratches through the left shield border confirm this, the most frequently encountered variety among double eagles recovered from the sidewheel steamer S.S. Central America. The deep connections that these salvage coins represent between the Gold Rush period and the eventual financial panic that occurred in the wake of the sinking make them appealing to numismatists, economic historians, and Americana collectors alike. More than 5,000 1857-S twenty dollar gold pieces were rescued from the shipwreck, accounting for the issue's status as the most collectible Type One issue in mint condition.
This Gem has rich sun-gold rims that lighten to peach and rose-gold centrally. Effulgent frost cartwheels over exceptionally clean surfaces that show merely a couple of scattered abrasions on the upper check and near the eagle's right (facing) wing. Fully struck with extraordinary visual quality, entirely deserving of the CAC approval sticker.
