Liberty Double Eagles
1859-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Medium S. The 1 in the date is faintly recut at its base on this Mint State 1859-S double eagle. This issue as a whole is rarely offered in Mint State. Most Type One double eagles are scarce or rare in Uncirculated condition, with the only true exceptions being dates recovered in quantity during various shipwreck salvage operations, as well as the 1861, which boasts an exceptional mintage of nearly 3 million coins. Above MS62, the 1859-S is represented by only a single coin (10/16). The present coin displays frosty original mint luster with orange-gold interiors that cede to brighter yellow-gold margins. The strike is sharp. Scattered abrasions determine the grade but pose minimal visual distraction. Population: 14 in 62, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 62, 0 finer (10/16).
