Liberty Double Eagles
1863-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Small S. The S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan are responsible for the increased accessibility of the 1863-S in Mint State. Such coins were virtually unheard of before being salvaged from the sea over the past couple decades. The two shipwrecks yielded about 60 Uncirculated coins, likely including the marvelous MS62 double eagle offered here, though there is no indication of such an origin on the insert. A needle-sharp impression shows full star centers, crisp feathers, and good detail on the curls for Type One twenty. Frosty luster mixes with peach and rose-gold color over surfaces that exhibit few important blemishes. Population: 15 in 62, 8 finer (10/16).
