Liberty Double Eagles
1865 $20 MS63 PCGS. Formerly housed in an MS63 NGC holder with the S.S. Republic pedigree, this frosty, medium-gold example is exceptionally lustrous with great eye appeal. Only a few minor marks interrupt the smooth fields, while the raised motifs are unmarked save for some tiny abrasions on the chin, jawline and cheekbone. The strike is essentially full throughout.
The Garrett and Guth reference notes that 320 1865 double eagles were salvaged from the shipwreck, a bonanza for collectors since prior to the recovery the issue was generally seen in VF to XF condition. Mint State pieces were previously virtually unknown. The S.S. Republic coins Mint State coins were generally in remarkably pristine condition, with superb luster and surfaces -- an apt description for this Select Uncirculated coin. Population: 9 in 63, 5 finer (11/16).
