Liberty Double Eagles
1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The S.S. Brother Jonathan capsized on July 30, 1865 off the coast of California, not far from the harbor at Crescent City. Only 19 of the 263 passengers and crew survived. The treasure sat untouched for more than a century until its discovery in 1993. More than 1,200 double eagles were salvaged, nearly all in mint condition.
Housed in a PCGS holder with the special Brother Jonathan label, this Choice Mint State double eagle is remarkably well preserved, and appears virtually the same as the day it was struck. Faint orange toning accents the brilliant yellow surfaces.
