Liberty Double Eagles
1866-S $20 No Motto VF35 PCGS. Small S. The With Motto reverse dies were delayed in transit to the San Francisco Mint, which proceeded to strike an estimated 120,000 No Motto twenties before switching over to the new design. The No Motto pieces were distributed promptly when made, and most circulated until well-worn or lost to attrition. Possibly as few as 200 pieces survive in all grades -- or perhaps a few more -- making the issue one of the scarcest Type One twenties from any Mint.
This Choice VF example is smoothly worn with attractive apricot-gold color and faint traces of luster at the margins. The expected small marks are mellowed by wear, with no heavy abrasions and strong rims. The devices are well-defined for the grade. A scarce and highly sought-after final-year type, and a necessity for series specialists. Population: 4 in 35, 120 finer (11/16).
