Liberty Double Eagles
1868 $20 MS61 PCGS Secure. The regular-issue 1868 Liberty double eagle boasts a low Philadelphia Mint production total of 98,575 pieces, making the date scarce in all grades today. Few collectors were interested in saving date runs of large denomination gold coins in the 19th century, because of the high expense, and the few who did systematically collect double eagles preferred to update their collections by acquiring gold proof sets from the Mint every year, rather than obtaining regular-issue specimens. Since so few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors, the 1868 is very rare in MS61 condition, and finer coins are almost never available.
The present coin is an attractive Mint State specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show full radials on all the obverse stars, but just a touch of the usual softness on Liberty's hair. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked for the grade, with ample mint luster on both sides. Overall eye appeal is quite strong. Population: 7 in 61, 3 finer (11/16).
