Liberty Double Eagles
1870 $20 MS62 PCGS Secure. The 1870 Liberty double eagle claims a nominal business-strike mintage of 155,150 pieces. The date is surprisingly elusive in all grades today, especially in Mint State. Like most Type Two twenties, the 1870 circulated heavily at the time of issue, and few were saved by contemporary collectors. The expanding system of rail transportation made it easier and safer to transport domestic gold shipments overland, rather than by sea, so few Type Two issues have been recovered in recent shipwreck finds. Accordingly, the 1870 double eagle is definitely rare in MS62 condition, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable.
The present coin exhibits pleasing yellow and peach-gold surfaces that show the minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade, with vibrant mint luster on both sides. The design elements are sharply detailed and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 21 in 62, 2 finer (11/16).
