Liberty Double Eagles
1871-CC $20 -- Edge Repair -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 1-A. The 1871-CC is the second-rarest Liberty double eagle from the Carson City Mint in absolute terms, from a small mintage of 17,387 pieces. The entire mintage was released into circulation at the time of issue and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors, making the 1871-CC a prime condition rarity, as well. Most examples seen are heavily abraded, with condition ranging from VF to lower AU grades. Only a handful of coins have been certified in Mint State.
The present coin shows some light wear on the strongly impressed design elements, but the star radials are fully brought up and much interior detail in Liberty's hair remains intact. The surfaces show the expected number of scattered, moderate abrasions for the grade, but PCGS notes some repair on the edge. The overall presentation is quite attractive.
