Liberty Double Eagles
1873-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1872 and 1873 Carson City double eagles show nearly equal mintages and the dates are similarly scarce in About Uncirculated or finer grades, with the 1973-CC issue perhaps a bit scarcer than its predecessor in AU condition. The Comstock Load was turning out large quantities of gold, but the Carson City Mint saw only a small amount of the Comstock gold bullion. Most of the deposits were carried over to 1874, when CC-Mint double eagle production quintupled.
Light, orange-gold patina covers both sides of this pleasing example. Small marks and field chatter pepper both sides of the coin, but there are no heavy hits that distract the eye. Moderate wear on the high points of the devices attests to substantial time in circulation, but mint luster persists in sheltered areas. Tangible eye appeal remains.
