Liberty Double Eagles
1882-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Small Squat S. Like many of the Type Three twenties, the 1882-S is relatively available up through lower Mint State grades. It is scarce in Select Uncirculated and rare any finer. This frosty example displays attractive, honey-gold color with faint orange and olive accents. Cartwheel luster adds to the appeal. Abrasions are small and widely scattered across the smooth surfaces.
A conditionally challenged issue, the Heritage archives dating back to 19997 reveal just six appearances of the 1882-S in MS63 and none finer. This coin is certainly the equal to any of those. The Saddle Ridge hoard added 66 examples to the population in all grades, but only one of those coins certified numerically finer than this example. Population: 45 in 63 (3 in 63+), 3 finer (10/16).
