Liberty Double Eagles
1889-CC $20 MS61 ANACS. Variety 1-A. The Carson City Mint closed its coinage operations in March, 1885 and did not resume until 1889, when limited mintages of silver dollars and double eagles were produced. The silver dollars are perhaps of greater "demand rarity," although the 1889-CC twenties are extremely popular as well. Just 30,945 pieces were struck. The issue is relatively available up to the MS62 grade.
The present coin compares favorably with almost any MS62 example. Rich, sun-gold color illuminates minimally abraded, mostly prooflike surfaces, with the reflectivity limited only by light field chatter. There are no alloy spots or large marks. A thin abrasion to the inside of star 4 and another in the hair above the eye are minor in the context of most 1889-CC double eagles, while the coin displays a sharp strike and great eye appeal. An important opportunity for the astute Carson City specialist.
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
