Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1-A. A colorful and attractive representative of this conditionally challenging Carson City double eagle. Bagmarks are the downfall of many 1890-CC examples, and while the surfaces show numerous minor marks, the fields and devices are less abraded than most for the issue. The strike is sharp as usual, yet it is the vibrant patina backed by strong cartwheel mint luster that sets this coin apart.
Lilac and reddish-gold shades with traces of violet toning augment the vivid orange color that covers both sides. The fields are frosty yet semireflective. Struck from a later state of the dies, with die cracks throughout the reverse legend and a few tailfeather fletchings missing from die lapping. Population: 67 in 62 (4 in 62+), 8 finer (10/16).
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
