Liberty Double Eagles
1893-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-A. Coinage operations at the Carson City Mint were suspended in June 1893, for political reasons, as well as due to a decline in bullion output from the Comstock Lode that had been the driving force behind the branch mint's development more than two decades before. Double eagle coinage in the final year of production amounted to only 18,402 coins, although the return of trade export coins in recent years has supplied collectors with a number of Mint State pieces with which to fill their collections. However, in their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth add: "These coins have been widely distributed ... and in the future locating an Uncirculated specimen will be much more difficult than in recent years."
This lower-end Mint State representative displays sharp design elements set against partially reflective fields. The bright yellow-gold surfaces display light, evenly dispersed abrasions without any singular distractions.
From The Renz Family Collection of $20 Gold Coins.
