High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 NGC. The figure of Liberty seen on the High Relief double eagle is clearly based on the monumental work of General W.T. Sherman being led by the same figure of Liberty. At the time the Sherman was unveiled, some saw an ambiguity in the pairing of Sherman the Destroyer with a messenger of peace. As adapted to the twenty dollar gold piece, there is no ambiguity present. The figure of Liberty strides confidently forward into the future, clutching an olive branch in one hand the torch of freedom in the other. This is a deeply impressed example whose satiny luster has a noticeable accent of reddish patina over each side. Only the slightest contact marks can be discerned with a magnifier.
