High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 NGC. The wire rim or "fin" as it is called in Mint parlance completely encircles the reverse rim, but there is little evidence of it around the obverse rim. It is curious what constitutes a collectible in numismatics. The extruded metal that came to be known as the Wire Rim was viewed by Mint personnel as a defect, and something to be eliminated. Efforts were made to tighten the space between the die faces and the collar, and this largely worked. But collectors are always on the look out for what is different and potentially collectible, and as the years went by the Wire Rim twenties definitely fell into the collectible category. The surfaces of this piece display thick, satiny mint luster and are free from any noticeable contact marks, but a loupe will reveal a few tiny ones. Even orange-gold color is seen over each side.
