High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS66 NGC. The so-called Wire Rim variant of the High Relief twenties is a result of extruded metal that squeezed between the obverse and reverse die and the collar die. But the Wire Rim and Flat Rim distinctions are somewhat artificial -- neither is a pure category. The wire rim (or "fin") seldom appears uniformly around each side. It was viewed by Mint workers in 1907 as a flaw and an impediment to the commercial usage of the coins ("they won't stack," bankers of the day said). The Mint responded to this criticism by striking the last 20% or so of the production run with lesser traces of a wire rim -- the so-called Flat Rim variant of the High Relief.
This NGC-certified Premium Gem offers bidders the opportunity to acquire what is certainly one of the most desirable High Relief double eagles extant. The honey-gold color is evenly distributed and unquestionably original. Razor-sharp strike detail appears over all design elements, the surfaces being smooth enough to allow full appreciation of this feature. The finish is nearly mattelike in texture, a not-uncommon characteristic for the issue. This coin would please even the most discerning collector. Census: 25 in 66, 7 finer (11/16).
