High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, AU58 PCGS. Flat Rim High Relief twenties are a minting curiosity and little understood. They were not produced as a separate type even though modern collectors have treated them as such; rather, they were struck as a correction to a perceived problem. What we call today the Wire Rim twenties were actually a production flaw caused by too much space between the die faces and the collar. This was corrected in December 1907, but in reality almost none of the coins show zero "fin" or wire rim; it is more a matter of how much finning remains. This particular piece shows very little finning, only present on the lower right rim of the reverse. Little evidence of high-point friction can be seen, and the surfaces are bright overall with no visible contact marks.
