Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1911-S $20 MS66 NGC. A mintage of more than 775,000 pieces and a substantial Mint State population may identify the 1911-S double eagle as a common date overall, but collectors should not ignore the rarity of Premium Gem examples. Including duplication, we have handled only 31 such representatives, and only a single finer coin is known in MS67, which has not been seen at auction in nearly a decade. The present offering, one of the finest in an NGC holder, delivers radiant cartwheel luster and beautifully preserved orange-gold patina. The strike is sharp, and neither side exhibits bothersome abrasions. A rare coin and underrated in this condition. Census: 32 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (10/16).
