Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1912 $20 MS65 NGC. Dave Bowers comments on this issue in his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins (2004): "In the context of double eagles of this era the 1912 is one of the scarcer issues. However, in absolute terms enough are around that you will have no difficulty in finding a nice one at, say, the MS63 level. Gems are rare." As usual, Mr. Bowers' comments are correct. NGC has certified fewer than two dozen examples at the MS65 level and finer. The numbers at PCGS are similarly scant.
The present representative is boldly struck with thick, satiny luster over orange-gold surfaces. The fields are nearly of Premium Gem quality, although closer examination reveals a few abrasions on Liberty's midsection, thus defining NGC's Gem determination. Census: 19 in 65 (2 in 65+), 2 finer (10/16).
