Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1924-S $20 MS65 NGC. The 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle was once considered the rarest issue of the series, but a number of coins surfaced in European holdings over the years, making the issue only very scarce today, rather than excessively rare. However, most examples seen are in circulated or lower Mint State grades, making the 1924-S a condition rarity at the MS65 grade level, and virtually unobtainable any finer.
The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and outstanding eye appeal. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster and show only the most insignificant signs of contact. On close inspection, a few microscopic alloy spots are evident on the reverse. Census: 20 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (10/16).
