Commemorative Silver
1928 50C Hawaiian MS67 PCGS. CAC. High-end 1928 Hawaiian commemorative halves are scarce. At least half of the nearly 10,000-coin regular-strike mintage -- and some have theorized that most of it -- was distributed on the Hawaiian Islands, with many pieces going to novelty enthusiasts who were not disciplined in the art of coin preservation. Rapidly rising secondary market prices for the issue drove many pieces to be bought up by investors. A small hoard of 137 coins that was auctioned in 1986 came from the vaults of the Bank of Hawaii, the entity that originally began distribution of the commemorative in 1928.
Regardless of their origin, Premium Gem-quality Hawaiian half dollars are scarce today, and finer coins are extremely rare. This Superb Gem is among the finest certified, and it is the only top-grade coin endorsed by CAC. The strike is bold, and the satiny surfaces display exceptional preservation. Both sides are cast in a blanket of rich olive-gold and lemon-yellow toning with deeper amber and russet around the peripheries. Population: 4 in 67 (2 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 67, 0 finer (11/16).
