Commemorative Silver
1925 Norse Medal -- Brass Die Trial on Oversize Planchet -- MS65 Brown NGC. Approximately 38 mm. in diameter. Early in 1925, the initial trials, such as the present piece, were struck on oversize round planchets. A round planchet was far easier to manipulate during the striking process than an octagonal planchet, and was the logical choice within the Mint prior to Congressional approval of the Norse-American commemorative program. Following approval, eight-sided pieces were minted to test the dies and coinage procedures. Once all was ready, the thin planchet silver pieces were struck on May 21-23. Thick planchet pieces were struck in late May and June, along with the small diameter gold medals and the large diameter silver-plated medals. This sharply defined piece has satin luster with olive-brown surfaces that exhibit glimpses of original red-gold color with hints of pale blue overtones.
