Territorial Gold
(1837-1842) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU53 PCGS. K-20, R.4. America's first gold rush took place in Georgia and the Carolina's in the 1820s and 1830s. Private coiner Christian Bechtler coined gold deposits into well-accepted coinage for the miners of the region, saving them the arduous and hazardous overland trip to the Philadelphia Mint. Bechtler's coinage circulated widely in the Southeast United States until the Civil War. This variety was struck in the sixth series of Bechtler coinage, from 1837-1842. The five dollar coins are scarcer than their one dollar counterparts. This attractive AU53 example offers well-detailed design elements and lightly abraded antique-gold surfaces that retain traces of original mint luster in selected areas. Housed in a new 30th Anniversary green label holder. Listed on page 389 of the 2017 Guide Book. Population: 14 in 53, 19 finer (11/16).
