Coins of Hawaii
1883 12.5C Hawaii 12 1/2 Cents PR62 PCGS. The eighth-dollar or hapawalu pattern is the great rarity of Hawaiian coinage. Only 20 proofs were struck, and no business pieces were ever made. The denomination was intended to rid the kingdom of worn-out Spanish-American reales, but was apparently deemed too similar in diameter and value to the U.S. dime and the equivalent Hawaiian keneta. The dies used to strike the proof patterns have survived, and reside in the Hawaiian State Archives, although the obverse dies were defaced in May 1888. The present eighth-dollar specimen is fully struck and displays light silver-gray toning. The fields are flashy and lightly hairlined. A rare opportunity to acquire this rare Hawaiian denomination. Population: 2 in 62, 7 finer (11/16).
