1883 50C Hawaii Half Dollar PR63 PCGS. As part of the 26 proof sets reportedly issued and dated 1883. Six sets were struck in September, 1883 as four-coin sets (lacking the eighth-dollar coin, the hapawalu) and another 20 five-coin sets were struck in 1884 (dated 1883) for a total of 26 silver proof sets. King Kalakaua himself may have distributed the proof sets. The silver proof half dollar (or hapalua) is particularly rare in Select Proof or finer condition. This originally toned example displays a pinpoint-sharp strike on the portrait and iridescent shades framed by a deeper ring of gunmetal gray and blue tones at the margins. Population: 3 in 63, 1 finer (11/16).
