Coins of Hawaii
1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS64 PCGS. CAC. This crisply struck and coruscating near-Gem displays medium wheat-gold toning. Both sides are exceptionally free from contact. The akahi dala (or one dollar) is the scarcest of the four issued 1883 denominations. After Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898, the 1883 issues were recalled in favor of U.S. coinage. Hawaiian banks forwarded the pieces to the Treasury Department, where they were stored and eventually melted. As a single-year design type, the 1883 dala is scarce in all Uncirculated grades. Population: 23 in 64 (3 in 64+), 22 finer. CAC: 7 in 64, 8 finer (11/16).
