Coins of Hawaii
1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS65 PCGS. A fully struck and satiny Gem bathed in powder-blue, chestnut-gold, and olive-green patina. The 1883 Hawaiian coinage was struck at the San Francisco Mint from designs engraved by Charles Barber. Four denominations were issued: the keneta, hapawalu, hapaha, and dala; respectively equivalent to the U.S. dime, quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar. The dala or dollar had a mintage of 500,000 pieces, but most were eventually melted, leaving a net production of 46,348 pieces. It was the third time that the U.S. Mint produced foreign coinage. The Mint previously struck 2 1/2 centavos issues for Venezuela in 1875 and 1876. Population: 16 in 65 (1 in 65+), 6 finer (11/16).
