1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1293, Pollock-1435, R.4, PR64 NGC. CAC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The design is similar to the issued Trade dollar, but Liberty's left hand rests on a globe with raised LIBERTY on a scroll, showing parts of North and South America. A cap rests atop the Liberty pole she clutches in her right hand, and plow handles and a sheaf of wheat are behind the globe. On the reverse, a small-sized eagle holds a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak. His left (facing) claw holds three arrows, his right a federal shield with scroll bearing IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is a beautiful example of this Trade dollar pattern -- a popular collecting specialty among pattern aficionados -- showing pastel blue and mint iridescence in the centers complementing gold patina near the rims. A bit of strike softness appears on the eagle's claws, but otherwise there are few complaints on this piece. The Judd-1293s were decades ago thought to be much rarer than today, but their relative availability is a boon for collectors.
